  • Raising Daughters Like Sons

#WhyDoWe "I have raised my daughter like a son” (Maari dikari ne dikaraa ni jem moti kari chhe) hmmm... How about “I have raised my son like a daughter”? (Maaraa dikaraa ne dikari ni jem moto karyo chhe”?) Progressive Desi parents say this with pride that they are so open-minded that they are raising their daughters to be independent, to be educated and to earn their own livings. Traditionally, in a patriarchal society, women or girls stayed at home, cooked, cleaned, raised their children, and were not educated and did not earn a living. This is great that times are changing and people are giving their daughters the same opportunities, however what hasn’t changed is that the women got these wonderful new independent things to do, and yet are still required to hold a house, raise children and other domestic tasks. Equality in true sense will be when ALL tasks needed to create a happy and healthy home are divided amongst the family members regardless of their gender. Boys need to learn all domestic tasks just as much girls do. How often do you go to a Desi gathering where men are still served food and they eat and clean up is left to the women? Oh and God forbid if a single male chooses to help cook or clean, he is considered a “woose” or “whipped”. Our family is no exception, but we are all working on changing this. Giving and teaching the tasks of doing dishes, vaccuming, doing laundry, grocery shopping, and more to the men and boys in the house is a great place to start. You as a parent can take pride in saying I am raising my son like my daughter. Few things that may work are to divide the days of cooking and cleaning, make it clear before meals start what job is whose, switch it up often so no one is bored, intentionally give non-traditional tasks to each gender. What are some ways you are practicing this if you are in your home? Looking for other ways to educate and build independence in your daughter? • Judging Those Who Don't Speak English

#WhyDoWe We look the same, we dress the same, we eat the same food, then why do you say he is Bengali, Sri Lankan, Pakistani? And why are we called Indian?” my little nephew asked this question one day. It got me thinking how did some people who thought of themselves as superior to everyone else, came to a new land and spliced it up in different parts. Before the British invasion, we were a one big large nation and a force to be reckon with. You have to give it to the British empire, for knowing and learning the psychology of all the nations and lands they invaded. They knew exactly how to break us. They knew how strong we were spiritually and mentally, but they also knew where we were weak. Change our education system and make everything about them and their lifestyle seem glamorous and superior including their LANGUAGE and their way of life. Who doesn’t want to be their best and best was defined by them. Even to this day in India, many people think if you don’t speak English you are inferior or “gamaar”. Instead, how about we treat those people who choose to talk in their native language in their homes, families and with their friends with respect, reverence and admiration? I have noticed this with young families when their toddlers only speak their language even amongst their own people, they are looked down upon like why doesn’t your kid speak English? English is a necessary tool to survive in this global economy but it doesn’t have to invade your homes. Next time you come across a child who speaks only Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi, Marathi, Urdu, Bengali or any of the native languages, take a second and commend that parent for bringing this gift to their child. As adults, who live outside of India or even in India it is difficult to speak in our native language with each other, so these parents are dedicated and diligent about speaking their language and that takes effort so show some appreciation and not a smirky or cocky look like their child is inferior! What do you think? How do you plan on raising your children? #whydowe #gamaar #language #indianhistory #gujaratilanguage #culture

  • An Honest Experience with Marie Forleo's B-School

Working hard vs working smart We are a culture where working like a horse, being productive and utilizing our time and every minute to the best of our ability is the status quo. We want all the luxuries, traveling and more and so we work hard. However I am learning that working smart can get you all of that and peace and calm with it. Trust me, I worked “hard” for years too and then a dear friend of mine introduced me to “Marie Forleo” and “B -School” Who is Marie Forleo? Marie is a marketing + lifestyle expert and NY Times best-selling author of the book, Everything is Figueroutable. I first came across Marie when I was going down the rabbit hole of Youtube videos and came across her Q&A Tuesday . Why I instantly and continue to connect with Marie: She is goofy and real. This keeps things light and make me feel like she is a friend nextdoor She is not perfect, and she is not afraid to goof up and even to admit this on screen I totally love her Jersey accent especially when she tells stories about her childhood She is always looking for ways to keep growing which important to me as an example Dancing – I can totally see myself doing this (you'll understand when you watch her!) She shares and teaches from her heart so nothing she does feels sales-pitchy Doesn’t claim to know it all or claim to be a guru in any aspect (Now THAT I relate to!) Her spiritual growth and ability to examine being a woman with a 360 degree view I can go on and on... So What is B-School? B-School is a 6-week, interactive video lessons course that teaches effective and profitable online marketing strategies for business owners who want more, who want to grow and make more money and also for people who have a great idea they haven't yet presented to the world and need help getting started. That was a little bit me.. At first, when my friend introduced me to this, I was like 'I can watch free youtube videos and learn'. When I first started my business, I was content to use free tools, thinking I didn't need to pay for training. So I grew a smidge here and there...tiny increments at a time. It seemed fine enough. Then, I saw that what Marie Forleo had that I wanted was something she was offering: ready-made templates/materials, community, tons of encouragement and and just really clear guidance. I talked to my husband and he said let's do it.He has an amazing business sense and reminded me that you have to invest in yourself and in your brand so that you can learn to do this effectively and earn 10x more than this investment. And boy am I glad I did this. Just in the 1st year, my business was in 5 figures but it jumped to 10x more to 6 figures in the next 2 years and it continues to grow great leaps and bounds every single year. If you are a small business owner and have been wanting to learn how to market your business effectively then I say do it. Enroll in Marie Forleo’s B school. You are so so worth it. In Gujurati we say “"hamanaa 1000 kharachiye to 10,000 banaavataaa sikhiye” Translation: Invest 1,000 now so you can learn to earn 10,000 later. B-School takes place only once a year. This year (2021) enrollment opens July 22nd and closes July 28 (after that...you have to wait until enrollment opens again NEXT year!) Session begins August 2nd. If you're curious about it at all, I suggest watching these 3 free trainings she has out right now. Click this picture to take you there. 3 FREE Advanced Training Videos Or she's doing a Webinar Thursday July 22, 2021. Sign up here. I talk about my experience with B-School and I give you my honest review about it in a video over on my YouTube channel which you can watch here. For a general big picture overview of Marie Forleo's B-School, see here. The Member's Only access to the course looks like this (in case you're curious): If you look at the side bar to the left you will see just a snippet of the amount of content you get with this course. I wish you all the success and peace you can possibly find in the endeavor you choose to follow. Know that you can do it. Everything is possible.. What I discovered is that by doing this training, I work smarter now and I wish that for you too. Work smarter and have that passive income that gives you freedom to live and enjoy this life to its fullest

  • How to do Grah Puja/Ghado mukavo/Vaastu pujan?- Hindu housewarming pooja

How to do Grah puja/ GHADO MUKAVO/ Vaastu pujan on your own? House warming pooja the Hindu way. Navaa ghar ni pooja or grah pravesh is a sacred ritual. 🏠 Moving into a new space is precious and sacred for all of us. For many Hindus this is made even more special by following a tradition of bringing lots of light, positivity, freshness, good thoughts and good energy through the puja into this new beginning. As we are spread all around the world, we don't have access to a priest or pujari to conduct these pujas with or for us all the time. 🏠 Can you move into a space without performing this and would something bad happen if you don't? The answer is you can certainly choose not to do this and nothing bad is going to happen. The reason I personally love these small traditions is because it signifies the purity and sacredness of new beginnings. These rituals fill my heart with gratitude and love. It doesn't need to be a fancy affair if you can do it with a clean mind and pure intentions. Our God is a very forgiving one, so if you make some "locha"(mistakes) he is not going to come after you and punish you. We perform this not just for our house where we will be living but for our new businesses or offices as well, simply to bring in all the good energy and gratitude in this new space. This is a simple way that my family performs this on our own, of course if you can and want to invite a priest you most certainly can. 🏠 What you need: (This is typical of most Hindu rituals however there may be some variations) Copper or Silver(chaandi) kalash Kumkum/kanku powder Haldi/turmeric powder Chandan/Sandalwood powder Whole rice (not broken ones) - for puja Water 5 leaves of Mango or Asho palav for kalash and more for toran(door hanging) 1 cup rice - for patalo/kalash 1 cup Mung beans - Mug 1 cup whole wheat (not broken) 1 cup rock salt 1 cup sacker (whole sugar) Divo/Diya with Ghee Agarabatti/dhoop Fresh fruit Fresh flowers New coins 1 tbsp of Milk Baajhat/paatalo(spot to put everything down) Red Cloth Picture or a small statue of any deity 2 Fresh coconut (brown) naadiyers What to do: Clean the door frame of the main entrance of your home or space. You can choose to hang a toran - mango or aso-palav leaves threaded in a simple thread or marigolds/galgotaa toran across the main entrance. (optional) Apply five chaandalaas (dots) on the main door frame of your house with kumakum, haldi, chandan and rice. Light a divo here and dhoop as well. Prepare the Kalash outside the house before walking in, You can choose to draw a saathiyo or swastik on the coconut with kanku. Fill the kalash with clean drinking water, dab of milk, fresh new coins and few drops of the kumakum, haldi, chandan and rice mix. Cover the mouth of the kalash with the five mango leaves and put the coconut on top. Lady of the house or a young unmarried girl carries this kalash as this symbolizes the entering of goddess Laxmi (goddess of wealth). Chant a simple Ganesh mantra "Om gam ganpat aye namah" or Gayatri mantra and ask them to enter the house with their right foot first. By your altar, or mandir in the house they can sit and pray or wait while you get the paatalo ready or have it ready ahead of time. For the Paatalo put this in the kitchen in the south east corner or where you can. Draw a saathiyo or have a pile of different grains beginning with rice, mung, wheat, salt and sugar. Light a divo here and use dhoop. Decorate it with fresh flowers around it as you are inviting the Gods especially Lord Ganesh and Laxmi Maa to come in your space. Gently put the kalash on top of this. Symbolizing and praying that may all that enters through these doors be pure, clean, healthy, nutritious, and filled with prosperity. Turn on the stove in the house and invite the divine Agni or energy in your fire so that all that is cooked in this kitchen is filled with health and strength. Do five chaandalaas on the stove top as well. Use the second coconut break it outside the house by the front door and sprinkle that water around the house outside blessing it with protection and love. Use the fresh fruit for prasad and share the coconut and prasad. Take the blessings from your elders The whole time you can choose to chant any mantras you know or simply play them in the background.

  • Gluten free, Vegan and Vegetarian friendly places to eat in San Diego

I have been a vegetarian all of my life and in the 90s and early 2000s it was hard to find good food that was clean and tasty outside of our home. We didn't go out to eat much for that reason. However things have changed in the recent years. I have been gluten free for 12 years now and beginning of 2021 I became vegan as well. I don't have celiac disease or strong food allergies but do have sensitivities to both dairy and wheat. I can get away with eating a little bit but feel so much better when I don't so I choose to avoid them. Food nowadays can taste super delicious without having gluten or dairy in your diet. My daughter loves to experiment with food and she has even been making me deserts that are without any processed sugars or these allergens and let me tell you they taste divine. So if you are in the same boat as us, not being able to find good, delicious vegetarian or gluten free foods outside of your home and are in the San Diego area, I say don't hold back. Try out these wonderful restaurants we love so much. Now that I have my "favorites" I love having our work meetings there for lunch or dinner and we share ideas while we enjoy the delicious foods. Normally when we go out to eat its always major modification to the menu, hold off on the bun or bread, no cheese, no eggs, and more. Living in San Diego however where so many people see benefits of avoiding these allergens, we have options now. Here are some of my personal favorite places that I enjoy and I wish to continuing adding to this list so please do share in the comments below your favorite vegetarian friendly, gluten free or vegan restaurant in San Diego so we can continue to grow this list and enjoy clean, yummy foods together. Thai food By far this Vegetarian Thai food restaurant in Universal heights PLUMERIA is our go to. We have guests over we take them there or do take outs. Not everything on the menu is gluten free so be sure to ask your server to specify the options for you. I love the Larb Salad with Beans and my kids love the mock Chicken Satays with peanut sauce. Sushi SUSHI DELI in hillcrest was introduced to us by my brother in law. This place is not completely vegetarian but has so many vegetarian options. If you don't like seaweed in your sushi you can get it with soy paper. You have to specify to make sure no fish sauce or oyster sauce in your food. The crunchy bunny and bee hive rolls are our favorites. You can also get the hot hot shauna without the sauce(not vegetarian) and make your own mayo and sriracha sauce at home. Italian BUONA FORCHETTA in Golden hills is a great place with lots of options and the sitting outside in the court yard is lovely. There are other fancier Italian places like Il Fornaio in Coronado which is great for ambiance but the vegetarian food options as pricey as they are, not so great. FILIPPI'S PIZZA GROTTO is another good one with gluten free pizza options along with MONA LISA in the little Italy area of San Diego Mexican CASA DE GUADALAJARA in Old town San diego is very authentic and the food is delicious. You can request to have chopped and roasted Jalapeños and onions be added to your dishes. They don't have many vegan options but you can work around it by avoiding cheese as much as you can. ON THE BORDER is generic but for some reason, I like them in Mission valley area. Indian There are many fancy Indian restaurants around San Diego being catered to non desi people and those places are all about the gorgeous ambiance and dishes and decor. You want authentic desi foods, head over to the Miramar or little India town in San Diego. Two of our favorites are SURATI FARSAN (mainly for snack or bite food) and RASRAJ for all punjabi foods. These are smaller restaurants. ASHOKA in the same area also has good punjabi food and they can make it as customized as you would like and this one you can dine in together comfortably in larger groups. If you want to stay near the downtown area and want the pretty decor and good food then try CURRYOSITY. We loved their food and decor both. Their Nimbupaani is like having masala soda off the street cart in India. Vegan Recently my daughter introduced me to THE VILLAGE in El Cajon and this place was really really good. I mean its a blend of Mexican and Japanese cuisine and its all vegan. Has many gluten free options and even the drinks were so good. Normally at Mexican restaurants chips are salty but their chips have no salt and the salsa is super good. EVE in Encinitas is another wonderful vegan restaurant, the decor is fun and funky and also the area, the street you can walk around on and the food is really good. Of course before any of these vegan places came to be our favorite was and I still love their food is CAFE GRATITUDE its a sister restaurant of the famous GRACIAS MADRE in Los Angeles area. So many fun options to order from and love their menu and way of using affirmations in your order "I AM_____". Now let's hear about your favorite vegetarian and gluten friendly places to eat in San Diego. Please share your recommendations in the comments!

Usually, vegetables are steamed and sautéed with simple spices. You can add onion or coconut for additional flavor. Adding coconut to this poriyal elevates the dish like no other. A South-Indian Thali is incomplete without this poriyal and you can prepare poriyal with veggies like beets, carrots, potatoes, plantains and even spinach. She recommends using Tuscan/dinosaur kale as it is less curly and easier to roll. Because baby kale leaves are more tender, these patras cook fast. These can be pan fried or steamed and then pan fried with a quick tempering. See below for the recipe: Recipe: 12-15 baby kale leaves 1 tsp mustard seeds 1tsp sesame seeds 1/2 tsp asafetida 1 tbsp oil Chickpea paste: 3 tbsp besan (chickpea flour) 1tbsp rice flour 1/2 tsp turmeric 1 tbsp green chilli paste 1 tbsp ginger paste 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ajmo 1 tsp oil pinch of baking soda 2 tbsp tamarind chutney enough water to make a thick paste Mix all the ingredients together for the paste and set aside. Wash and pat dry the kale leaves, and remove the fibrous stalk using a knife. Spread a thin layer of the paste on the inside of the leaf then roll. Heat up a pan with oil and add asafetida, mustard seeds and sesame seeds. Once you hear some crackling, turn the heat down to the lowest setting and add the leaves one by one. Cook uncovered to retain green color. Continur to turn so the entire roll is covered in the tempering. Cook until cooked through and enjoy! #foodfriday #indiancooking #foodindia #indianfoodblog #indianfoodtales #goodfoodindia #indianfood #homemadefood #indianfood_lovers #indianrecipe #indianfoodrecipes #indianlunch #indianfoodstories #thecrazyidianfoodies #indianfoodiesquad #thechillichick #patra #kalepatrarolups #chickpeapaste #vegan #plantbased #gujaratifusion #gujjufood #tuscankale #kale #tempering Paneer Kathi Rolls June 18th, 2021 Popular Indian street-food, Paneer Kathi rolls are warm, layered parathas filled with spicy paneer, mixed peppers and sweet caramelized onions.
