Have you tried Gujarati or Hindi learning and feel like it hasn’t been working for you or your family?
I know this can be frustrating as second or third generation Indian Americans, we want to do the best we can to pass down the culture and language our parents worked so hard to preserve.
The reasons it's not working for you is...
Our parents made this a priority, but their approach was more like this:
“Do what I am telling you to do” “
Stop asking questions”
“We do this because this is how its been done”
“We only speak Gujarati in the house”
“We go to the mandir regularly because this is where you will be cultured with other Indian Kids”
We followed along, and it may have worked for some of us so that we ,as adults, can now understand and speak some Gujarati or Hindi, or we just flat forgot about it all.
Some of us (LIKE ME!) had to work hard to assimilate in this blended life of ours as American Indians, so we put the culture and our language aside for a while.
Now, as young parents or young adults, we often ask ourselves, “Who are we?”
and this leads us to our cultural identity
and as we learn more about our culture, we realize how valuable this is.
We want more of our culture and language for our families and we don’t know how to make it happen.
I have learned over the years that our parents approach of forcing doesn’t work with our evolved families.
I continuously strive to make our online Gujarati and Hindi classes more relatable and interactive for all of our students and it works.
Why does it work?
It encourages students and their families to speak more at home, while working on stories, songs, and activities.
For our older students they learn through play acting or practicing actual scenarios and dialogues
During class there is a segment where students are moving, and not simply staring at the screen
When understanding, or the “why,” reveals itself ,the students want to learn vs. being forced to learn.
Convenience of doing classes from anywhere in the world. You can relax and not stress about your busy schedules.
Festivals and traditions are explained and practiced in class.
There is so much more, but at the core of it all, you don’t feel alone.
I am here to support you in this journey. This is not a sprint. Language learning and retaining and mastering it is a marathon !!!
