Astrology is a big deal in the hindu culture and in Gujarat. According to wikipedia:
Jyotisha (or Jyotishyam from Sanskrit jyotiṣa, from jyótis- “light, heavenly body”) is the traditional Hindu system of astrology, also known as Hindu astrology, Indian astrology, and more recently Vedic astrology. Vedanga Jyotisha is one of the earliest texts about astronomy within the Vedas.
For many Gujarati household, this is a way of life. They check the daily newspaper to see what their raashi (astrological sign) has in store for them for that particular day. They begin any new and auspicious event after checking in with the charts to make sure it is a good day and time to begin this.
Many Gujarati Newspaper like Gujarat Samachar include a daily reading known as “Aaaj nu panchaang”. Many Bollywood stars are found wearing gem stones rings and other jewelry that aid in their charts to be better in this lifetime.
