THERE IS NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT… AND NO PRESENT LIKE TIME

Updated: May 3, 2021

You want something done, do it now! I grew up hearing this in my family.

During summer vacations when I stayed with my grand parents in their small village, I woke up every morning listening to my Dada(grandfather) singing this doha (couplet).

Kaal kare so aaj kar, aaj kare so ab

pal mein pralay hoyegi, bahuri karoge kab?

Tomorrow’s work do today, today’s work now

If the moment is lost, the work will be done how?

He would sing this to remind us that stop putting off doing something because time is precious and there is nothing like the present moment. If the thought of doing something came to your mind, you have the charge, the inspiration to do this and if time permits don’t put it off because the more you say, I will do it tomorrow or when I have time, you will continue to loose the motivation behind the task. I would say I need to cut my nails, he would respond, go get the nail cutter now. I would be lazy and say may be later today and that would set him off on his trail of teaching moments.

Now that I am no longer that 8 year old little girl, I realize what he really meant and why he wanted me to make that a habit. Now as I am moving about the house, I do things as I see them like most mothers do. Laundry needs to be done, start a load. Tidy up the living room, pick things up from the floor now. Trash need to be taken out, take it out now. There are things that can’t fit into this idea of doing things now like I have to go to the bank but I am cooking, so I have to wait till I am done. I need to write a blog, I need to sit down and think so that may have to be on my schedule during quieter times. I can’t do them now but doing them earliest I can without being lazy is the key.

Time is precious and we can respect that by fully being in the present moment, having clarity of mind, and not abusing time with meaning less things.

Seize the moment when you can. This is by no means to say, I do everything as soon as I can. There are times that I will put things off and sometimes I get to them and sometimes they stay on my to do list for more than months.

So you know what needs to be done,  go do it now!
