You fall down and scrap your knees… Mom says put some Hadadar (turmeric) on it. You have a cold… Mom says drink some aadu (ginger), Hadadar(turmeric) and Limboo (lemon) water.
I live and love this part of the Indian (Gujarati) culture. Mom has a home remedy for almost everything. We in the western world don't look at these with the reverence and respect this deserves. Allopathic medicine is there for a reason. For small ailments it is healthier to go through this natural healing.
Why use home remedies:
It has worked for centuries, it's easy to follow and it is normally through things you have around your home. Side effects are close to none.
Here are few home remedies known as Ghar Vaidu… (house hospital), in Gujarati, that we use around our home.
1. For digestion aid: Teaspoon of ajwan with a pinch of turmeric after meals.
2 . For cough and cold: "Yellow Dava" (yellow medicine). Ajwan, turmeric boiled in water, strained and salt and lemon juice added.
3 . For liver health: Warm glass of water with lemon in the morning.
4 . For scrapes and cuts: Putting Hadadar (turmeric) and dabbing it straight on the cut.
5 . For rashes and breakouts: Tbsp of chanaa no lot (gram flour), pinch of turmeric mixed with milk to make a paste and rub it on the breakout and leave it for 5 min. Rinse with cold water.
Every Gujarati family has a go to remedy. I would love to hear what works for your family. Feel free to leave a comment so we can all learn from each other.
