I love our Indian culture where we get to celebrate different bonds and relationships in festivals. Did you know Rakshabandhan is also known as Badev in Gujarat.
Rakshabandhan = Raksha (Protection) + Bandhan (Bound by a promise.)
Rakshabandhan or festival of Rakhi is one such festival where a sister ties a small thread of protection around her brother’s wrist with blessings and in return, the brother blesses her with gifts and promises to always be there for his sister. How beautiful is that?
In India, sisters travel to their brothers’ houses and tie these blessings on them. Young boys show off how many sisters they have by showing off many rakhis on their wrists going all the way up to their elbows. Outside of India, its another occasion for family gatherings.
Many homes these days where there are only sisters, tie the rakhis on each other to promise the protections and blessings to each other.
Let's have fun passing these simple traditions to our children with a simple explanation of why and what?
